Hating the sounds
Dear Doctor, my 8 year old son hates the sound of utensils. If I am taking dinner and any sound of steel bowl and spoon happens , he just shuts his ears and ask me to stop it. What may be the cause of this reaction. Please explain.

Hi have you checked with an ENT specialist. Please make sure you consult one to rule out any physical ear issues. If you have consulted or the doctor has ruled out any physical issues we can try to understand this deeper. Since how long has he been facing this issue is also very important to know.
Next Steps
If the ENT rules out any physical problems please do consult a therapist. There could be various reasons. At times children associate any particular trauma that they have gone through with the sounds that were present during that trauma. We would need to discuss things like these in depth and in detail. You can contact me through Practo and we can discuss this further.

Reassuring him that you value and respect his feelings by communicating the same and showing him that you care enough to be careful while working in the kitchen could be helpful. When he realizes that his fears are not out of place or abnormal, he could trust you to share the reasons for hating such sounds. But before probing further, show him that you care and reassure him that it is normal to hate certain kinds of sounds.
