Majority of tympanic membrane perforations do not heal spontaneously. They must be closed by tympanoplasty. Perforated TM gives rise to recurrent ear discharge & deafness. If you want to get relief, you have to undergo surgery.
Your mother seem to have suffered from acute suppurative otitis media which is a common type of acute Middle ear infection. Usually with appropriate treatment infection will subside and hole in the ear drum will close but there will be collection of watery fluid in the middle ear for one or two weeks which is known as otitis media with effusion. Usually it is a self resolving condition and not much of treatment is required
