1. What are the causes of getting cold sore?
A cold sore is a viral infection caused on the lips and mouth. Virus HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus -1) causes cold sores. The virus usually stays in the body even after the cold sores go away and there can be a recurrence of the sores. Fever, stress and tiredness can trigger cold sores.

The herpes simplex virus causes cold sores. Once the virus enters your body, it stays in a dormant condition, until some factors trigger it. Cold winds during cold season can trigger cold sores. Hence, cold sores can occur during the cold season.
3. What are the symptoms of cold sores?
The symptoms of cold sores are as follows: tingling, itching and irritation at the lips and mouth; a group of blisters on the lips; fluid leaking from the blisters; formation of dry crusts after the fluid has leaked; pain at the lips; and fever.
4. How are cold sores treated?
Cold sores usually go away by themselves and do not need treatment. You may treat them in the following ways: using antiviral creams; antiviral tablets; pain killers; Zinc oxide ointment for the dried sores; cold sore patches to protect the area; and cold compress to ease the discomfort. If the cold sores do not go away in two weeks or are filled with pus then contact your dermatologist.
5. Do cold sores occur repeatedly?
Cold sores may repeatedly occur in some people. The virus herpes simplex-1 (HSV-1) that causes cold sores remains in the body in the dormant condition after the first infection. If there are triggers such as low immunity, cold or hot season, sunlight or other infections, the infection may occur again.
