1. What is thrombocytopenia?
Thrombocytopenia is a disorder in which platelets count in the blood reduces to a very low level. Platelets are colourless blood cells that play an important role in blood clotting at the time of injury.
2. What are the signs and symptoms of thrombocytopenia?
Symptoms of thrombocytopenia are small injuries leading to bruises or blue spots on the skin, long-term bleeding from cuts, bleeding gums, blood in urine or faeces or heavy menstrual periods.
3. What are the underlying causes of thrombocytopenia?
Thrombocytopenia may be caused due to genetic factors, any disease, medications, low platelet production or increased platelets destruction.
4. How is thrombocytopenia diagnosed?
Thrombocytopenia can be diagnosed with: (1) a blood test to count the number of platelets (between 150,000 and 450,000/ml of blood), (2) an ultrasound to check if the spleen is enlarged and (3) bone marrow examination with biopsy or aspiration.
5. What are the possible treatments available for thrombocytopenia?
Treatment options for thrombocytopenia are: (1) limit alcohol consumption, (2) avoid high-risk activities to prevent unnecessary injuries, (3) stop using medications that affect platelets, (4) blood or platelets transfusion in severe cases, (5) spleen removal surgery if it is affecting platelets and is untreatable, (6) steroids and (6) immune globulins treatment.
