Gynaecology is basically a branch of medicine which deals with health of the reproductive organs of women (ovaries, uterus and vagina). Hormonal problems, problems related to the urinary tract of women, cervical cancer, and breast cancer all fall under the ambit of treatment by a gynaecologist.
There are variety of reasons for which you need to consult a gynaecologist. As soon as a girl touches puberty she should consult a gynaecologist to help guide her regarding menstrual hygiene and notice any signs of delayed period, any issues related with irregular periods, menstrual cramping, PMS etc. Once a woman becomes sexually active it becomes vital to consult gynaecologist so that problems such as vaginal discharge, vaginal irritation or any kind of sexually transmitted disease are treated right at the onset. Other times when a woman should see a gynaecologist is when there is a change in her menstrual cycle, menopause, lumps in the breast etc.
There are different specializations for gynaecologists. Firstly there are Obstetrician/gynaecologists, also referred to as OB/GYNs who deal with women during their pregnancy and post delivery. OB/GYNs also offer preventative care, early identification of sexually transmitted diseases and Pap test screening. Then there are Urogynecologists. They basically treat women suffering from pelvic floor disorders by means of reconstructive surgery and nonsurgical means. Another specialization area for gynaecologists is Gynecologic oncologists, who treat cancers of reproductive-organs by means of radical pelvic surgery, urological surgery, and gastrointestinal surgery. For infertility issues the specialist who needs to be consulted is reproductive endocrinologist.
The consultation fees of a gynaecologist usually begin at Rs 500.
Removal of Ovarian cyst Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000
Hysterectomy Rs1,82,000- Rs 2,40,000
Gynaecologists offer different kind of treatments as per requirement of the patient.
Ovarian cysts– Ovarian cysts are like a sac which is formed on surface of ovaries. Bigger cysts need to be removed surgically.
Fibroids- These are benign growth in the uterus and need to be surgically removed if they cause pain or hinder pregnancy.
Ectopic Pregnancy- This is a dangerous condition and needs immediate medical attention as the fertilized egg implants inside the fallopian tubes.
Treatment for Endometriosis- Endometriosis is a benign condition but still causes problems like pain during intercourse, pelvic pain etc. There are medical and surgical treatments for endometriosis.
Infertility Evaluation and Treatment- Women having difficulty in conception can opt for infertility treatments.
