Bike hit my leg and I have a fractured fourth metatarsal shaft-displaced. Right now, they have put a POP plaster for a week. And have asked me to come back after being week for the cast. I'm on pain killers. Although it still pains and leg feels very heavy. In what position should I keep my foot? Can I sleep on my sides? How long will it take to heal? Im a college student and my exams are coming up. Can I walk with the aid of crutches? And can I put my leg down while sitting or should I stretch it all the time?

Hi, this it's Dr Hitin Mathur foot and ankle surgeon based in New Delhi. If your 4th metatarsal is displaced I would suggest that it needs a reduction and probably wire fixation to keep it in place. The limb should be kept elevated most of the time to decrease the swelling and pain. U can turn in bed with the plaster on. Fracture becomes stable in 6weeks but full healing well take upto 3 months. Swelling can continue upto 6 months to 1 yr.
