There was a news by BBC that ECT causes brain damage. In this case why should people with severe mental condition be treated by ECT?

Unfortunately it was a segment run by journalists and not medical professionals, hence it cannot be considered medically and factually correct A lot of newer anti depressants, anti psychotics, mood stabilisers are available now a days; along with newer modalities like rTMS, tDCS, Ketamine therapy, hence need for ECTs have significantly reduced Nevertheless ECT is still advised in treatment resistant cases, active suicidal ideation, severely agitated individuals as it is highly effective and minimal side effects with carried out by a good team of psychiatrists and anaesthesiologists
