1. What is UTI?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary system, including your kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra. It can affect anyone (age, gender), but is more common in females. If only the bladder is invoved it is called cystitis and if urethra is invoved it is called urethritis. If the infection reaches the kidneys, it is termed as nephritis.
2. What causes UTI?
It is mainly caused by the entry of bacteria from genital areas (vagina,anus) into the urethra, which could travel to the bladder. Common organisms are E.coli, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Organisms may be transmitted during sexual activity. It is more common if you have had a previous episode, have diabetes, excess weight, obstructive conditions of urinary tract or kidney stones.
3. What are the symptoms of urinary tract infection?
The symptoms of UTI include
-Urgent and frequent urge to pass urine
-Painful or burning sensation or foul smell while urinating
-Fever with chills
-Fatigue
-Blood or pus in your urine
-Cramps or soreness in mid- back,lower belly, sides
-Pain in your mid-back (to the right or left of the spine)
-Nausea and vomiting
4. How will it be confirmed whether I am suffering from UTI ?
You might be suffering from UTI if you experience the symptoms mentioned above. It is further confirmed by simple urine analysis.In cases of repetitive recurrent infections, urine culture is carried out.
5. How can you prevent UTI?
UTI can be prevented by ensuring the following:
- Drink 2-3 litres water daily
- Clean the private areas from front to back
- Clean the private areas after visit to the washroom
- Wear loose fitting undergarments of fabrics like cottonthat prevent moisture from retaining
