A veterinarian or vet is a medical professional who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries as well as diseases observed in animals. They also educate the owners on how to take proper care of their livestock or pets.

The graduate course in veterinary medicine takes four years, after which one can start practising. Some candidates may further pursue a postgraduate specialisation course, which is generally for a duration of two years.

The responsibilities of a veterinarian include:
Immunising animals against illnesses, such as rabies or distemper
Performing diagnostic tests such an ultrasound, MRI, blood tests, or urine analysis
Euthanising animals
Performing surgery
Preventing dental and other diseases
Dressing wounds
Diagnosing and giving medicines
Advising owners about taking care of their animals

A veterinarian can perform surgery in animals, including livestock, pets, laboratory, and zoo animals. The surgical procedures can be grouped into three categories, which are orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and soft tissue surgery (such as skin, body cavities, cardiovascular system).
