Cellulitis is a skin infection caused by bacteria which causes the skin to turn red and swell. The affected area becomes warm and the person experiences pain.

Symptoms of cellulitis include skin redness, warmth, tenderness, pain, swelling, fever and red spots or blisters.
3. What are the common causes of cellulitis?
Cellulitis occurs when bacteria enters the skin through a break, cut or wound. The lower extremities are more commonly affected but other parts of the body such as the region around the eye, the face, breasts and other regions may get affected. Cellulitis can also be caused due to animal bites .
4. How is cellulitis diagnosed?
The doctor generally diagnoses cellulitis by observing the patient's skin. Additional blood tests such as culture tests may also be carried out to confirm the condition and rule out others.
5. What are the possible treatments for cellulitis?
Since cellulitis is caused by bacteria, antibiotics are prescribed to treat the infection. The duration of antibiotic therapy may last upto two weeks to ensure complete elimination of the bacteria from the body. Hospitalisation may be required in extreme cases.
