Eyes are considered to be a window to the soul. So, you don’t want them to be sore or red.

Redness of the eyes can happen when the blood vessels on the surface of the eye dilate or expand. It can happen due to an infection, lack of sleep, spending too much time in front of the screen, an allergy, or due to a foreign substance in the eyes.

Red eyes can be treated easily at home if there is no extreme burning sensation or pain associated with it. Here are some easy tips to treat red eyes at home

1. Rinse Your Eyes

Rubbing your eyes constantly can cause red eyes or may worsen already red eyes. For red eyes, the easiest remedy is to rinse your eyes with plain water.

Splashing water on your eyes will help reduce inflammation and can also help get rid of the foreign substance or any irritant that is causing the redness of the eye.

However, make sure your hands are clean and you are not wearing contact lenses before you rinse your eyes. The ideal way is to bend over a sink and splash water into the eye or eyes, with your head tilted to one side.

You can splash water up to 7 to 8 times at one go and stop for a few minutes before doing it again. You can also rinse your eyes  3 to 4 times a day, to prevent red eyes.

2. Apply Cold Compress

Cold compress is one of the most effective, easy and natural remedies for treating the redness of the eyes. The cold temperature helps to tighten the skin around your eyes that relaxes the blood vessels and reduces the redness of the eyes.

Simply dip a clean, soft cloth in cold water and place it over your eyelids for 5 to 10 minutes. It will help relieve swelling and reduce itching and irritation if any.

3. Use Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help in reducing the redness of the eyes. It helps to cure irritation in the eyes and also prevent inflammation of the eyes.

You can blend aloe vera gel and water and refrigerate it for an hour. After that, soak two cotton pads in it and place them over your closed eyes.

These simple home remedies are short-term solutions for the redness of the eyes. For long-term relief, consult an eye doctor if you experience red and irritated eyes regularly.
