CHONDROMALACIA PATELLAE is the softening &breakdown of cartilage that attaches the patella from the posterior surface. And this breakdown leads to pain when the femur and patella rub together, also there is a feeling of grinding when the knee is flexed. CAUSES of Chondromalacia patellae are: patella is normally resting over the front of the knee joint & when the knee is flexed patella glides over the cartilage of femur, and tendon & ligament attached to the patella keep it aligned. But due to Knock-kneed, flat-foot, weak hamstring & quadriceps, muscular imbalance & repeated stress to the knee leads abnormal patellar “tracking” toward the lateral side of the femur causing abnormal rubbing of the patella on the femur results in deterioration of patella & chronic inflammation and pain in the knee. Common SYMPTOMS are: pain behind the knee cap that worsens after sitting for a prolonged period, feeling of grinding, &inflammation. There are 4 GRADES, in which Grade 1 indicates softening of the cartilage in the knee. Grade 2 indicates the softening of cartilage along with tissue erosion. Grade 3 indicates the thinning of cartilage with the wearing of the tissue. & Grade 4 is the most severe grade, indicates exposure of bone and bone-to-bone rubbing.
