Did you know that gum disease increases the risk of heart disease? Recent research done at the University of Michigan has demonstrated that there indeed is a link. Individuals who have gum disease (inflammed gums, tartar, mobility in teeth, history of teeth falling out ) are at an increased risk of developing heart disease. The American Academy of Periodontology mandates that every person get a yearly assessment from a Periodontist (dental specialist, not general dentist). Prevention is better than cure, so use of dental floss, and brushing twice a day are ways to prevent onset of periodontal (gum) disease.
