The meniscus is the cartilage in the knee joint. Thereare two menisci the lateral and the medial. The lateral meniscus is more mobileand the medial is rigid that’s why the medial meniscus tear is about threetimes that of the lateral meniscus.
The main function of the meniscus in the knee joint isshock absorption, load sharing, and knee joint stability.
Common causes of meniscal tear are: twisting or jumpingor change in direction especially in sports or skiing. The tear may bedegenerative as in the older population. The tear may also may occur inassociation with arthritis.
These are the common symptoms by which you can get anidea about the cause of your knee pain: pain at the medial or lateral side ofthe knee, tenderness, posterior knee pain when the knee is bent, there is thelocking of the knee, clicking sound, and the swelling.
Not all meniscus tear requires surgery, and since theperipheral meniscus tear heals itself but still the healing is not similar toany other healing mechanism because healing of meniscus leaves fibrocartilagescar, which will cause a reduced joint range of motion and sometimes pain andcause a reduction in your functional ability. But you can recover back to fullor near full function where the injury no longer limits you in your activities.
