Do you know anything about bleaching? Let s know everything about what it is and how can it be done.
Most of us are mainly concerned about the staining that occurs in our tooth. But we have no idea on how staining can be managed.
So stains are basically classified into two types
A. Extrinsic Stains
B. Intrinsic Stains
A.Extrinsic stains: This can be present on he outer surface of the tooth. They are basically scrappable stains. They can be easily removed by scaling
Eg: Staining due to habits like smoking, consumption of tea, Intake of tobacco products etc.
B.Intrinsic stains: These kind of staining of tooth mostly occurs due to changes from within the tooth itself.
Eg. Stains due to intake of certain medicines like tetracycline, internal resorption - due to trauma or pulpal injury, mild to moderate cases of flurosis.
How can intrinsic stains be treated?
Lets know the various methods of treating intrinsic stains
A.Bleaching: Basically bleaching is the process of breakdown of complex stain causing molecules of teeth into simple components that lighten the teeth.
So it is to be noted that at the time of bleaching, the shade can be made one step lighter than the original shade but t does not actually cause a perfect white tooth appearance.
Types of bleaching techniques:
1. In-office bleaching: Bleaching is done by a dental professional. Using higher concentration of chemicals like Carbamide peroxide, sodium perborate. Duration 30 min to 1 hr. In this method. the bleaching agent is either light activated or heat activated to hasten the result.
2. At- home bleaching technique: This technique makes use of lower concentration solutions for bleaching. Here the patient can apply the solution or the gel on to a custom made tray that fits their teeth that has to be worn by the patient during the night time.
The thing that has to be noted is that , the bleaching results can be noticed after 3- 4 weeks.
What are the disadvantages of bleaching:
1. Sensitivity of tooth. Basically applying mild acids can only cause sensitivity to tooth. Therefore it becomes an inevitable effect.
2. Irritation to gums
B.Veneering: This is another technique that can be used for stained tooth. In case the patient is esthetically concerned.
Partial veneers involves the process of trimming of the outer structure of tooth mildly and creating cap like structures that can cover the outer surface of tooth with less stain than the normal stain of tooth.
Therefore many procedures are available to manage your stains, however a proper consideration of what your problem is and what staining is actually caused due to becomes imperative.
